Scale ModelWorld - the Set-up Day
Showtime!
I thought it might be too much to hope to post regular updates through each day and so it has proved. The poor weather has had an impact, making the helicopters nearly two hours late in arriving. However, they're all snug and warm in Hall 3 now.
The Centurion also arrived late in the afternoon and we have just finished guiding it into place. Ditto the Dodge Stealth which visitors will see in the foyer when they arrive.
The Spitfire and Bedford QL are also in place.
Traders and exhibitors are are also arriving in numbers and setting up their stands.
Tomorrow will see all four halls buzzing with activity so come along and visit the greatest plastic modelling show in the World!

Armour
Swap - Enter the Centurion
The Chieftain Mk 10 scheduled to appear at SMW 2013 will no longer be attending the show. Perhaps we should have expected that with the Chieftain's reliability record... All is not lost however as it is being replaced with a Centurion, also from Melvin Cordwell's collection. It is a well known vehicle due to its many appearances at the War and Peace show. The Centurion is in full working order and, we are assured, very reliable.

Gerry Anderson Trophy for Scale ModelWorld 2013
IPMS
(UK) is honoured to announce the inauguration of a special Gerry
Anderson Trophy for Scale ModelWorld 2013. The new award, to be
present annually, will be for the 'best model in the science fiction
category of a spacecraft, vehicle or diorama'. Anderson passed away
in late December 2012 but his legacy lives on in the TV series he
created over a period of some 40 years.
Gerry
Anderson will be best known for his classic 'Supermarionation' TV
series such as Thunderbirds, Fireball XL-5, Captain Scarlett as well
as the later live-action UFO and Space 1999. The characters and more
importantly the vehicles and spaceships, inspired modellers all over
the world. Models, both commercially available examples and amazing
scratchbuilt masterpieces have graced the science fiction classes and
display tables at model shows for many years and they remain popular
to this day.
The
new trophy is the brainchild of the Wakefield Branch of IPMS (UK),
who approached Competition Secretary Tony Horton with their proposal.
IPMS (UK) approached the Trustees of the Gerry Anderson Estate, who
have graciously allowed us to use the Gerry Anderson name for the new
trophy.
Gerry's
son, Jamie, said "I'm sure Dad would have been pleased to know
that talented modellers would be recognised with a trophy bearing his
name".
Tony
Horton, IPMS (UK) National Competition Secretary said "The Gerry
Anderson Trophy is in honour of the man who has had an influence on
our hobby, but in particular those modellers who enjoy creating and
modelling Science Fiction subjects".

Chieftain Tank at Scale ModelWorld 2013
IPMS
(UK) has added yet another attraction to the impressive line up
already confirmed for Scale ModelWorld 2013. We already have
helicopters, cars and science fiction exhibits to whet your appetite
and now we have armour in the shape of a Chieftain MK10 Stillbrew.
The
Chieftain MBT was the mainstay of the British Army from the mid 1960s
until the early 1990s. The Chieftain was the first true Main Battle
Tank and the most powerful tank in the western armies for many years.
It was revolutionary in many ways most famously for the driver’s
reclined driving position and the infamous Leyland L60 Multi-fuel
engine which resulted in the Chieftain gaining a reputation for
unreliability. Despite its reliability issues the Chieftain is
fondly remembered by all who worked on her.
The
Chieftain MK 10 attending Scale ModelWorld is owned by Melvin “the
tank man” Cordwell and is part of an extensive collection of modern
armoured vehicles and tank transporters that Melvin has put together
in just 5 years. Melvin is delighted to be attending the show and
will be on hand to answer questions and talk about the Chieftain and
any of his other vehicles.

World War and is a keen modeller. One of his many world-record

Two Vietnam Helicopters at Scale ModelWorld!
IPMS
(UK) is pleased to announce that the UK’s only flying UH-1 Huey
will be joined by another Vietnam veteran helicopter the OH6-A Loach.
Both
of these helicopters have documented combat histories and will make
an impressive display at Scale ModelWorld 2013. The Huey and Loach
will be flying to the Telford International Centre on the Friday
before the show and will be on display with various items of
memorabilia in Hall 3 over the show weekend.
The
UH-1 Huey is one of the most famous helicopters in the world. It is
to helicopters what the Spitfire and P-51 are to fixed wing aircraft.
The Huey is most famous for its role in the Vietnam War where they
flew 36,145 sorties in roles ranging from air assault to medevac. It
is estimated that around 2600 Hueys were based in Vietnam and Huey
509, our star attraction, served with the 129th Assault Helicopter
Company during 1972 and completed 108 flights totalling 559 combat
hours flown. The Huey is painted in the markings she wore during this
period.
The
Hughes OH-6A was manufactured in 1969 and was the 470th machine off
the production line. She was shipped direct to Vietnam where she
served with the 20th Transport Company and led an interesting life
including being shot down and recovered while under fire. This
incident occurred on 17th August 1970 when on a recon mission she was
hit 11 times by small arms and automatic weapons which damaged the
fuel system.
The
helicopter is painted in the colour scheme she wore in Vietnam.

New IPMS (UK) Adverts in the Modelling Press
IPMS (UK) has launched the first of a series of new adverts int he modelling press this month.
This represents a significant change from the old advert that has been in use for some 18 months and is designed to showcase the huge range of modelling subjects that Members of the Societyenjoy. Each month, a different theme will be presented, building a broader picture of the diversity of the modelling that we encourage and support within the hobby.
We already have nearly a dozen different sets of artwork in preparation and thanks to the IPMS membership, we've been able to photograph an excellent selection of models to promote the Society.
The first advert has appeared in Scale Aircraft Modelling and Military Modelcraft magazines, courtesy of Guideline Publications. The adverts will also continue to run in Airfix Modelworld courtesy of Key Publishing and later this year in a number ADH Publishing's titles too.

IPMS Tours - 2013 Special Tour Packages
Scale
ModelWorld has for a long time been the high point of the
International modelling year and with 2013 being the 50th
Anniversary of IPMS (UK) this year’s show will be extra special.
As part of the build up to SMW 2013 and the 50th
anniversary get together we have invited IPMS affiliate organisations
from across the world to attend. Several organisations asked if we
could help with ideas for places to visit while they were in the UK.
As
a result of these enquiries we have put together two tours of the UK
in association with Anderson Tours, the UK’s leading tour
organiser. The tours are designed with the modeller in mind and
visit many of the outstanding museums in the UK and cater for
aircraft, ship and armour modellers as well as a number of ‘must
see’ tourist attractions. We have tried to tailor the tours to
suit the differing needs of our overseas visitors so one has more
museums and fewer tourist sites and the other is the complete package
with both museums and tourist attractions. The high point of both
tours is of course the 2013 Scale ModelWorld IPMS 50th
anniversary show. For
full details of the tours and the show please visit the SMW website

Scale ModelWorld 2013 - Latest News
Scale ModelWorld 2013 is the IPMS (UK) 50th Anniversary show and we hope to celebrate the Society’s fiftieth year in style. A tremendous amount has changed in our hobby since we first started in 1963 and Scale ModelWorld 2013 will be highlighting those changes and the part the Society has played in them. Many of our Branches and Special Interest Groups will be tailoring their displays to reflect their take on this milestone and in Hall 1 there will be a special display to reflect the history of the Society and the development of the hobby over this time. As well as a stunning selection of models made over the last fifty years it is hoped to have a selection of previous competition winners too. Alongside the model displays will be box art from various manufacturers, magazines, catalogues and other ephemera together with information boards showing the history of IPMS (UK) and its development.
In Hall 3 we will again have an exciting and varied selection of 1/1 scale attractions including the UK’s only flying UH-1 Huey helicopter, armoured vehicles, cars and for the second time the Fylde replica Spitfire. Also making a repeat appearance will be the Mk 1 Shackleton nose section from the Shackleton Preservation Trust who has recently announced its intention to return WR963 to the skies.
For Science Fiction fans we will also be featuring some very special items thanks to Mat Irvine and Mike Tucker, the well-known special effects gurus who will be hosting a special Sci-Fi display with models and props from many iconic TV shows including the original K-9, Marvin the paranoid android, the Liberator from Blake’s 7 and the Starbug from Red Dwarf amongst others. It is also rumoured the Daleks might be planning an invasion over the weekend.
Trader bookings are well up on last year with several traders increasing the size of their stands and many new traders attending for the first time. Over 170 traders will be at the show and at the time of going to press over 99% of trade space is booked. Branch and SIG display space is also going quickly as many have asked for extra space this year.
We always have a lot of overseas visitors but this year many more are hoping to visit the show and with this in mind the Society has organised in association with Anderson Tours (link to http://www.andersontours.co. uk/default.asp ) two sightseeing tours which should be of particular interest, full details can be found here. (link to http://www.smwshow.com/tour. php)
Scale ModelWorld 2013 is shaping up to be the best event of its kind ever and is definitely not to be missed; we look forward to seeing you there.
