Scale ModelWorld - the Set-up Day

Showtime!

I thought it might be too much to hope to post regular updates through each day and so it has proved. The poor weather has had an impact, making the helicopters nearly two hours late in arriving. However, they're all snug and warm in Hall 3 now.

The Centurion also arrived late in the afternoon and we have just finished guiding it into place. Ditto the Dodge Stealth which visitors will see in the foyer when they arrive.

The Spitfire and Bedford QL are also in place.

Traders and exhibitors are are also arriving in numbers and setting up their stands.

Tomorrow will see all four halls buzzing with activity so come along and visit the greatest plastic modelling show in the World!

The Mat ‘n’ Mike Show

To celebrate 50 years of both the IPMS and a certain television Doctor... , Mike Tucker and Mat Irvine will be presenting their ‘Visual Effects Travelling Road Show’ for both days of Scale Model World at the Telford International Conference Centre, over 9th and 10th November.

For Doctor Who’s 50th Anniversary, Mat and Mike have assembled a collection of effects props and filming miniatures representing all eras of the show; including Daleks, Cybermen, the TARDIS and both incarnations of K-9, (as seen in School Reunion).

But it’s not all Doctor Who. The Show will also feature exhibits from other well remembered BBC science fiction and fantasy shows, including the Liberator and Orac from Blake’s 7, models from Captain Zep, Star Cops and Red Dwarf, plus The Tripods miniatures, anti-Triffid gun, Marvin the Paranoid Android and the rarely-seen Moon buggy from the short-lived series Moonbase 3.

With a combined total of 50 years at the BBC Visual Effects Department, Mat ‘n’ Mike will be talking about their years in visual effects and showing how the props and models are made. Their various books, particularly their co-authored book, ‘BBC VFX’, will be available for sale - with the rare opportunity that both authors are available to sign!

Scale ModelWorld 2013 News Update

IPMS (UK) has a number of updates to announce in relation to Scale ModelWorld 2013.

Zoukei – Mura Pre-Order Offer
Zoukei – Mura will be accepting pre-orders for collection at Scale ModelWorld. You can only order via their website www.zoukeimura.co.jp/en/index.html. The offer is only available between 20 September and 20th October and due to the limited number of kits they can ship over, the offer is made on a first come first served basis.

Armour Swap - Enter the Centurion
The Chieftain Mk 10 scheduled to appear at SMW 2013 will no longer be attending the show. Perhaps we should have expected that with the Chieftain's reliability record... All is not lost however as it is being replaced with a Centurion, also from Melvin Cordwell's collection. It is a well known vehicle due to its many appearances at the War and Peace show. The Centurion is in full working order and, we are assured, very reliable.

Plans on website
Fully updated plans of the show and trader and exhibitor locations are now available in the show guide section of the Scale ModelWorld website (www.smwshow.com). The plans are of course subject to change and will be updated as required.

Scale ModelWorld
Scale ModelWorld, the annual IPMS (UK) Model Show, is the largest plastic modelling exhibition in the World and takes place on 9-10 November 2013 at The International Centre, Telford, Shropshire. TF3 4JH.

The competition alone attracts nearly 1,000 models by entrants from around the world.

Gerry Anderson Trophy for Scale ModelWorld 2013

IPMS (UK) is honoured to announce the inauguration of a special Gerry Anderson Trophy for Scale ModelWorld 2013. The new award, to be present annually, will be for the 'best model in the science fiction category of a spacecraft, vehicle or diorama'. Anderson passed away in late December 2012 but his legacy lives on in the TV series he created over a period of some 40 years.

Gerry Anderson will be best known for his classic 'Supermarionation' TV series such as Thunderbirds, Fireball XL-5, Captain Scarlett as well as the later live-action UFO and Space 1999. The characters and more importantly the vehicles and spaceships, inspired modellers all over the world. Models, both commercially available examples and amazing scratchbuilt masterpieces have graced the science fiction classes and display tables at model shows for many years and they remain popular to this day.

The new trophy is the brainchild of the Wakefield Branch of IPMS (UK), who approached Competition Secretary Tony Horton with their proposal. IPMS (UK) approached the Trustees of the Gerry Anderson Estate, who have graciously allowed us to use the Gerry Anderson name for the new trophy.

Gerry's son, Jamie, said "I'm sure Dad would have been pleased to know that talented modellers would be recognised with a trophy bearing his name".

Tony Horton, IPMS (UK) National Competition Secretary said "The Gerry Anderson Trophy is in honour of the man who has had an influence on our hobby, but in particular those modellers who enjoy creating and modelling Science Fiction subjects".

Chieftain Tank at Scale ModelWorld 2013

IPMS (UK) has added yet another attraction to the impressive line up already confirmed for Scale ModelWorld 2013. We already have helicopters, cars and science fiction exhibits to whet your appetite and now we have armour in the shape of a Chieftain MK10 Stillbrew.

The Chieftain MBT was the mainstay of the British Army from the mid 1960s until the early 1990s. The Chieftain was the first true Main Battle Tank and the most powerful tank in the western armies for many years. It was revolutionary in many ways most famously for the driver’s reclined driving position and the infamous Leyland L60 Multi-fuel engine which resulted in the Chieftain gaining a reputation for unreliability. Despite its reliability issues the Chieftain is fondly remembered by all who worked on her.

The Chieftain MK 10 attending Scale ModelWorld is owned by Melvin “the tank man” Cordwell and is part of an extensive collection of modern armoured vehicles and tank transporters that Melvin has put together in just 5 years. Melvin is delighted to be attending the show and will be on hand to answer questions and talk about the Chieftain and any of his other vehicles.

Scale ModelWorld, the annual IPMS (UK) Model Show, is the largest plastic modelling exhibition in the World and takes place on 9-10 November 2013 at The International Centre, Telford, Shropshire. TF3 4JH.
